It’s Emmy nominations day, and Sundance Institute storytellers are basking in the glow of primetime glory with nods for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Writing For a Nonfiction Program, and more.
The Television Academy dropped its 77th Primetime Emmy nominations this morning, and we’re thrilled to see that several breakout Institute nonfiction gems that premiered at both the 2024 and 2025 Sundance Film Festivals are among the nominees.
Will & Harper, a documentary following Will Ferrell and his best friend Harper Steele on a cross‑country road trip following Steele’s gender transition, and Pee-wee as Himself, Matt Wolf’s doc showcasing the life of Paul Reubens, who performed as Pee-wee Herman, led our noms list, landing five nods each. SKY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s documentary on the legacy of Sly & the Family Stone, as well as Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a doc chronicling the life of the iconic actor, also earned nominations.
See the complete list of Sundance Institute–supported Emmy nominees below, and be sure to mark your calendars and tune in for the Emmy Awards, which will be hosted by Nate Bargatze and broadcast live Sunday, September 14 on CBS, and streaming live and on demand on Paramount+. We’re sending our congratulations to the filmmakers and artists behind these films!
