The sun has set on the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, but fear not, film lovers! The independent storytelling spirit that filled all of our homes last month continues to inspire through this year’s Academy Award nominations.

The 2021 Festival alums shine throughout the full list of Oscar nominees, including historical nominations for Flee (the first film to be nominated for Best International Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Animated feature) and Troy Kotsur being the first deaf male actor to be nominated for an Oscar (Best Supporting Actor nomination for CODA).

However, the 2022 iteration of the Festival is also represented by Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, which picked up two nominations including Best International Feature Film, and Hugo Covarrubias’ Bestia (Best Animated Short). 

Along with Flee, four out of five of the Best Documentary Feature nominees are Sundance–supported films from Festival alums to Documentary Film Program Supported Projects (Ascension, Writing With Fire).
