It’s always rewarding when our story with Sundance Film Festival alums comes full circle. Almost 20 years ago, Ondi Timoner sat in an empty theater with her infant son to talk to us about her recent film DIG!, which she directed, produced, and edited. Now, her award-winning documentary is returning to the Festival as part of our 40th Edition Celebration Screenings and Events. 

The music documentary premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, and Timoner sat down to share a little about her project, which follows two bands — The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols — over seven years.

“I met [The Brian Jonestown Massacre] lead singer Anton Newcombe, and he explained to me that he was going to have a revolution in the music industry and that I should meet his friends, The Dandy Warhols, led by Courtney Taylor,” says Timoner, holding her son.

“I was pregnant with him during the last ten months of editing the film, and he was born a week after I finished the film. So, he knows all the songs of both bands.”

The sweet clip from 20 years ago is an awesome throwback, especially as we just announced that the 2024 Festival will debut a brand-new 4K restoration of DIG! as part of our 40th Edition Celebration. The extended version, titled DIG! XX, will feature over 30 minutes of additional footage.
