Station to Station: Doug Aitken’s Traveling Art Show to Make 9 Stops Across U.S.

Nate von Zumwalt

Doug Aitken is reconstructing the idea of the traveling artist. The multimedia artist’s newest project, “Station to Station,” will travel by rail for three weeks in September from the Atlantic to the Pacific, making nine stops along the way in New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Each stop will feature a one-night only live event that will connect artists, musicians, and creative pioneers. Tickets are now on sale for $25.

In 2008, Aitken brought a special single-channel version of his groundbreaking Museum of Modern Art installation, Sleepwalkers, to the Sundance Film Festival as part of the New Frontier program, a section dedicated to media installations, multimedia performances, and transmedia experiences. Now, Aitken’s work will give back to the many organizations that facilitated the creation and showcasing of his work in the past. “Station to Station,” as an artist-driven public art project made possible by the Levi’s brand, will donate all funds from the sales of tickets to support a number of non-profit partner institutions, including Sundance Institute. All proceeds that Sundance Institute earns from the project will go directly to the New Frontier program and support emerging multimedia artists.

Join the “Station to Station” happenings in your town and support emerging artists.
