Introducing the AI Literacy Hub on Sundance Collab
Sundance Institute recently announced a three-year, product-agnostic AI Literacy Initiative for filmmakers, with initial support from Google.org. We launched this work to support artists who are navigating a rapidly changing landscape — one that raises practical questions about new tools alongside urgent creative, ethical, legal, and environmental concerns. Our commitment remains the same: to help artists make informed decisions while keeping human creativity, lived experience, and artistic voices at the center.
Today, we are taking the next step in that commitment with the launch of the AI Literacy Hub on Sundance Collab. Free and publicly accessible, the Hub brings together a growing collection of resources designed to help independent storytellers understand artificial intelligence, consider its implications, and decide whether and how these technologies may have a place in their work.
A Resource Built to Grow With Artists
Artists are entering the conversation with different levels of familiarity, experience, and concern. Some are looking for a clear introduction to how these technologies work, while others are already experimenting with new tools and services. Some want deeper context about topics such as intellectual property, labor, bias, consent, data collection, fair compensation, and environmental impact.
The AI Literacy Hub is intended to meet artists wherever they are. At launch, visitors can explore a curated library of resources selected by Sundance Institute and participating organizations. This work is strengthened by collaboration. The AI Literacy Alliance brings together organizations committed to supporting creators in film, television, and the broader creative ecosystem as they empower themselves to learn through our resources. Alliance members will contribute resources and provide ongoing feedback to help the Hub remain useful and responsive to the needs of artists.
The Creators Coalition on AI, Film Independent, and The Gotham Film & Media Institute joined Sundance Institute as the alliance’s initial members when the initiative was announced. The alliance has since grown to include GFS, Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) Hollywood Bureau, National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC), and the University of Colorado Boulder.
The Hub is not designed to prescribe a single point of view or promote a particular product. Instead, it offers context that can help artists ask better questions, assess opportunities and risks, and make choices rooted in their own values and creative practice.
The library of content we’re launching today is a foundation, not a finished destination. We will continue to add timely resources as the technology and the conversations surrounding it evolve. All future offerings will be free including live online courses, on-demand learning, events, and conversations with artists, educators, and other experts. The conversation will also extend to the 2027 Sundance Film Festival through Sundance Institute’s Story Forum: Exploring Art and Innovation, a gathering launched in 2026 to investigate emerging forms of storytelling and the questions shaping its future.
One Part of a Broader Commitment
The AI Literacy Hub is one part of Sundance Institute’s broader AI Literacy Initiative. Alongside courses, events, community challenges, and programming during the Sundance Film Festival, the initiative also includes a yearlong Emerging Technology Fellowship led by Sundance Institute’s Artist Accelerator Program. The fellowship will have its own forthcoming update, and insights and case studies from that work will eventually become part of the learning available through the AI Literacy Hub.
We are aware that no static collection can answer every question raised by a technology that continues to change at a rapid pace. Our aim is to create a trusted place for artists to learn, reflect, exchange ideas, and remain active participants in shaping what comes next. The future of storytelling should not be determined by technology alone. It must be shaped by the artists whose imagination, experience, vision, and humanity give stories their meaning.
We invite you to explore the AI Literacy Hub on Sundance Collab and return often as new resources, courses, and events are added.
