This year’s New Frontier Double Feature hacks the cinema space and takes audiences on a fantastic journey from deep inside the building blocks of cinema itself to beyond the screen, and onto the stage of the Egyptian Theatre, for a kaleidoscopic homage to our biosphere, levitated by live musical performance and stagecraft.
First, the Egyptian becomes A Machine for Viewing, a three-episode immersive experience that is a rabbit-hole investigation of the relationship between the audience and the cinema. In these adventures in vision, directors Oscar Raby, Richard Misek, and Charlie Shackleton use real-time VR experience, live performance, and documentary video essay to explore how we watch films by giving audiences various “machines for viewing.”
Then, the Egyptian transforms into a multimedia performance space, where animator/performer Miwa Matreyek collaborates with the solo music project SORNE to give a live performance at the intersection of cinema and theatre. Infinitely Yours is a fever-dream interpretation and illustration of news headlines we see every day heralding the epoch of the Anthropocene and life-altering climate change.
