Schedule for Film Forward Kenya

Check out the schedule of screenings, panels, and events for Film Forward Kenya beginning July 15.

Friday, July 15th

GoDown Arts Centre
9 a.m. – 2 p.m. - Workshops conducted by Jennifer Arnold and Taika Waititi on the subject of storytelling and narrative techniques. These workshops will be attended by young participants from Nairobi’s slums and will include alumni of Ghetto Films, Kibera News Network, and SlumTV.

Leakey Auditorium – National Museum of Kenya
3 p.m. – 6 p.m. - Screenings of FilmAid refugee produced content. These screenings will be attended by invited guests, including representatives of the UNHCR, interested relief agencies, and the film industry.

6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. - Opening screening of the Film Forward program. Some brief opening remarks will be followed by a screening of Boy and a Q&A with Taika Waititi. This event will be attended by invited guests, including representatives of the film industry, embassy officials, and partner organizations.

9 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. - Post-screening reception. This will be an opportunity for guests and screen professionals to discuss and network.

Saturday, July 16th

GoDown Arts Centre
9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Panel discussion focusing on storytelling across different mediums, presented by Sundance Institute’s Film Forward and Theatre Program East Africa initiative.

2 p.m. – 5 p.m. - Workshops conducted by Jennifer Arnold and Taika Waititi on the subject of storytelling and narrative techniques. These workshops will be attended by alumni of the FilmInAfrica! Program (a mixture of past and present participants) and of MEDEVA (a community media program).

Goethe Institute
1:00 p.m. - Udaan
4:00 p.m. - Last Train Home - This feature will be followed by a screening of refugee short films and a Q&A with the refugee filmmaker.
7:30 p.m. - A Small Act - Followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Jennifer Arnold.

Sunday, July 17th

Goethe Institute
1:00 p.m. - Freedom Riders
3:00 p.m. - La Mission
5:30 p.m. - Public Screening of refugee short films and a Q&A with the refugee filmmaker. This will be followed by a screening of Afghan Star.

Monday, July 18th

Alliance Française
6:00 p.m. - Refugee short film followed by a screening of Son of Babylon.

Kibera – Kamukunji Grounds
6:30 a.m. - Outdoor public screening of A Small Act.

Kakuma Refugee Camp
8:30 a.m. - Workshop with Taika Waititi on narrative techniques and screenwriting. This workshop will be attended by members of FilmAid’s Participatory Video Program (PVP).
10:00 a.m. - Community leaders workshop on the role of media in development. This workshop will be conducted by FilmAid and Jane Muigai (Jane is featured in A Small Act as well as on the UNHCR staff).
2:00 p.m. - Daytime (indoor) screening of Boy followed by a Q&A with Taika Waititi.
7:20 p.m. - Evening (outdoor) screening of A Small Act.

Dadaab Refugee Camp
9:00 a.m. - Daytime (tented) screening of Boy – IFO Camp
7:00 p.m. - Screening of A Small Act at UNHCR headquarters for relief agency staff.

Tuesday, July 19th

Alliance Française
6:00 p.m. - Refugee short film followed by a screening of Winter’s Bone.

Mathare
2:30 p.m. - Public screening of Boy.

Kakuma Refugee Camp
8:30 a.m. - Workshop with Jennifer Arnold on narrative techniques in documentary film. This workshop will be attended by members of FilmAid’s Participatory Video Program (PVP).
2:00 p.m. - Daytime (indoor) screening of A Small Act followed by a Q&A with Jennifer Arnold.
7:20 p.m. - Evening (outdoor) screening of Boy.

Wednesday, July 20th

Alliance Française
6:00 p.m. - Refugee short film followed by a screening of Amreeka.

Dadaab Refugee Camp
9:00 a.m. - Daytime (tented) screening of A Small Act – Hagadera Camp.

Thursday, July 21st

The Tribe Hotel
6:30 p.m. - Closing night reception. Screenings of short refugee films, short remarks by key guests, followed by a screening of A Small Act. The formalities will finish with the announcement of the best refugee films.

Sunday, July 24th

Ft. Jesus Museum, Mombasa
7:15 p.m. – Film Forward, FilmAid, and Friends of Fort Jesus Society Presents: A Special Screening of A Small Act, with filmmaker Jennifer Arnold in attendance for a post-screening Q&A.
