Vanguard Awards

Presented by: Acura

The Vanguard Awards presented by Acura celebrate the innovation, originality, and independent spirit that the Feature Film Program, under the leadership of Michelle Satter, has fostered in artists over its 30-year history. The annual awards honor two filmmakers: one artist who is a leader in the independent film community, and one emerging artist who embodies visionary storytelling and engages audiences in fresh and exciting ways. This year, the Vanguard Awards will be presented to Quentin Tarantino and Dee Rees.

Quentin Tarantino

Vanguard Leadership Award

The Vanguard Leadership Award presented by Acura will be awarded to Quentin Tarantino in recognition of his distinguished career in filmmaking and advocacy of independent voices. Tarantino premiered his classic Reservoir Dogs at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival following his participation in Sundance Institute’s 1991 Directors Lab. Since then, Tarantino has supported the Institute over the years by returning as a creative advisor at its labs for emerging filmmakers, as a Dramatic Film Competition juror at the Festival, and at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival in China. He has continued to be a leader for bold, independent voices and will be honored for his creative vision at Sundance NEXT FEST’s opening night, Thursday, August 10.
