Eric Mendelsohn is a longtime member of the Sundance Institute family. His short film Through an Open Window screened at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival, his debut feature Judy Berlin premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, and he is an alumnus of the Feature Film Program’s Screenwriters and Directors Labs. His most recent film, 3 Backyards, premiered in Dramatic Competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, where Mendelsohn won the Directing Prize.

Sundance Institute had a great showing at the Oscar nominations this year! Congrats to all these projects which have been supported through Sundance Institute or the Sundance Film Festival.

Theatre in Salt Lake City has always surprised and delighted me. More than two thousand miles away from the hustle and bustle of New York, yet daring and risk-taking theatre is produced in Utah year after year, and there is an audience enthusiastic to support it. This season, three plays that were originally nurtured at the Sundance Institute Theatre Lab find life in Salt Lake City.

On October 6, 2010, the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program (DFP) and filmmakers Richard Ray Perez and Molly O’Brien are presenting a work-in-progress screening of their film, Cesar’s Last Fast with the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. This film offers a unique and very personal view of the intersection of Cesar Chavez’s faith and his activism. The project has been supported with a grant from the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program.

With Philip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut Jack Goes Boating scheduled to open nationwide September 23, we thought a little schooling on Mr. Hoffman’s Sundance Institute history was appropriate. In addition to Jack Goes Boating, which was in the Premieres category at the 2010 Film Festival, Philip Seymour Hoffman was an actor in Mary and Max (2009), The Savages (2007), the Park City at Midnight film Strangers with Candy (2005), Owning Mahowny (2003), Love Liza (2002), and Montana from the 1998 Film Festival.
