It's nice to see the community and the organizers as passionate about the festival as the filmmakers. It was an outstanding festival and experience. ~2012 Attending Filmmaker

The goals of WFPP are to jump start historical research on the work of women filmmakers from the early years of cinema, ending with the coming of sound; to facilitate a cross-national connection between researchers; to reconfigure world film knowledge by foregrounding an undocumented phenomenon: these women worked in many capacities.

While Phase I (launched online September 2013) places together the Americas, the U.S. in the North and Latin America in the South, the next phases (starting in the summer of 2014) will open up the study of women in other national silent era cinemas: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic and Slovakia, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, The United Kingdom, and former Yugoslavia.

WFPP is published by Columbia University’s Center for Digital Research and Scholarship (CDRS), in collaboration with Columbia’s School of Arts and Columbia Libraries/Information Services.

In 2010, in response to the energy of filmmakers and activists striving to stop the legislative War on Women, both in the U.S. and around the globe, we launched our first thematic cohort: REEL Reproductive Justice which consists of films telling compelling, character-driven story of women, health care providers, and policy makers as they personally grapple with the confluence of culture, religion, class, race, economics, and politics.
