When: June 10-15, 2013FILM FORWARD heads to Puerto Rico for a third year collaborating with the Puerto Rico Film Society. Filmmakers Josh Penn (Beasts of the Southern Wild) and Musa Syeed (Valley of Saints) join the program for five days of film screenings and discussions. New this year is the ShortsLab which will take place on Friday, June 14.
Beasts of the Southern Wild tells the story of a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee where a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphan hood. Valley of Saints is a moving drama that explores the relationship between two best friends and the female researcher, studying environmental degradation on Kashmir’s Dal Lake, who threatens to distract them from their dreams of escape.
Other films that will be screening with this program but without filmmaker representatives are: Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, Chasing Ice, The Light In Her Eyes, The Loving Story, Town of Runners, and Under the Same Moon (La Misma Luna).

First Session:
Filmmakers and a Short Film Programmer from the festival will present short films and talk about the process of making them, and how to navigate the film festival world at large, with plenty of time for questions from the attendees.
Second Session:
In a second part, the speakers will work with local filmmakers on more specific topics, such as:
• Story Development: conceptualization, script development, story, and dialogue.
• Collaboration: explore the collaboration process and the importance of having a good crew.
• Working with Actors: From rehearsals and blocking, to improv and timing, we look at what works best and what doesn’t work at all.
Third Session:
8-10 Shorts Filmmakers will be chosen to share their work-in-progress with Filmmakers and Short Film Programmer to get their feedback.

The Puerto Rico Film Society is a bridge to underserved communities that do not have immediate exposure to independent films. The Society has partnered with museums, educational institutions and local organizations which provides access to free monthly screenings. Our mission is to encourage and build conversation through independent and international cinema, that brings Puerto Rican audiences together to unite, educate and create dialog around contemporary, cultural and current issues.Venues

The company provides all type of production advisory services related to the production process. Pimienta is run by a remarkable team of film professionals dedicated to make films happen in Puerto Rico with the skills and passion, to handle effectively every step of the process, from development to delivery. The Team is headed by Luillo Ruiz, who is one of the leading producers in Puerto Rico, with over fifteen years of experience producing commercials and feature films.
The Photojournalism Workshop is a nonprofit organization created in 1994 by a group of photographers and journalists, led by Ismael Fernández Reyes, president and founder.
The motivation behind the workshop was to promote education and the use of technology in children and youth. We held summer camps and educational projects during the semester.
From 1994 to present have benefited from the educational offerings of the workshop at least 25,000 children and young people from 7-18 years old.Beta-Local is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting aesthetic thought and practice through various programs:
La Práctica, a post-academic study and production program, through which Fellows coming from diverse disciplines take a project from concept to production.The Harbor: a residency program for visiting international artists, architects, designers and other cultural producers. Visitors to Beta-Local, develop projects, workshops and offer lectures on a variety of subjects related to art and other creative disciplines to the general public and to La Práctica Fellows.La Ivan Illich, an open experimental school through which the participating public suggests, requests and creates courses and workshops and a full schedule of public programming which includes exhibitions, lectures, Pin-ups (open critiques), screenings and publications.We also have a small reference library, La Esquina, focused on art and designopen once a week to the general public.Boys & Girls Club of Puerto Rico
In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them.Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.
Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. We are truly The Positive Place For Kids. Boys and Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico have seven clubs located at Santurce, Río Piedras, Mayagüez, San Lorenzo, Carolina, Arecibo, Aguas Buenas and Loiza.
Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP), is an art museum located on Las Americas Avenue in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is considered the finest art museum in Puerto Rico. It houses a collection of European art, as well as work by Puerto Rican artists. The largest art museum in the Caribbean,it has also been called one of the best in the Americas. The museum contains one of the most important pre-Raphaelite collections in the Western Hemisphere, holding some 4,500 pieces of art distributed among fourteen galleries. It is the only museum in Puerto Rico accredited by the American Association of Museums. It was founded by politician and philanthropist Luis A. Ferré, and its current building was officially inaugurated on December 28, 1965.The Municipality of Ponce, officially the Autonomous Municipality of Ponce, is located in the Southern Coastal Plain region of the island, south of Adjuntas, Utuado, and Jayuya; east of Peñuelas; west of Juana Díaz; and bordered on the south by the Caribbean Sea. The municipality has a total of 31 barrios (wards), including 19 outside the city's urban area and 12 in the urban area of the city.
