About the Sundance Film Festival

Every winter in Utah, the Sundance Film Festival becomes the ultimate gathering of original storytellers and audiences seeking new voices and fresh perspectives. Our annual program includes dramatic and documentary features and short films; series and episodic content; and New Frontier, showcasing emerging media in the form of multimedia installations, performances, and films. We also host daily filmmaker conversations, panel discussions, and live music events. Since 1985, hundreds of films that have launched at the Festival have gained critical recognition and acclaim, reaching new audiences worldwide.

Awards & Jury

The culmination of the Sundance Film Festival is our Awards Ceremony. Winning a Festival award can be life-changing for a filmmaker, and can bring attention to the impactful stories that might not have otherwise reached wider audiences. Films in both the documentary and dramatic competition categories are eligible for a variety of prestigious awards bestowed by our juries, made up of individuals with original and diverse points of view from the worldwide film community. In addition, we invite audiences to vote for their favorites with five Audience Awards—given to one film in each of the four competition categories and the NEXT category—as well as the Festival Favorite Award, chosen from any feature category.

Catch the live streams of all the awards ceremonies at sundance.org/live.

New Frontier

New Frontier at the Sundance Film Festival showcases innovations in storytelling found at the crossroads of film, art, performance, and emerging technologies. New Frontier presents a multitude of experimental films, media installations, multimedia performances, panel/ discussions, and VR/AR/XR experiences in theaters and open social setting venues at the Festival.

To view previous New Frontier works, check out the 2018 program and 2016’s 10th anniversary mobile VR lineup.

Artists may submit their work in one of three categories for Festival consideration.

New Frontier Films
If you believe that your short or feature-length experimental film or video piece is particularly well-suited for our New Frontier Films program at the Festival, it should be submitted to one of the six short or feature film submission categories through Withoutabox. While we do not have a specific submission category for New Frontier films, you may select the appropriate genres from the niche list on your film’s project page and include in your cover letter that you would like your film to be considered for New Frontier.

New Frontier Virtual Reality Projects
Virtual Reality Projects submitted to the Festival are eligible to be selected for the Festival’s New Frontier Exhibition. Projects should be submitted to our Virtual Reality Projects submission category on Withoutabox. We encourage the diverse creative community of storytellers and technologists to submit inventive, independently produced works of fiction, documentary, and interactive projects for consideration. We request that you provide a link to a 360° video file (.mp4), app download package (.apk), or other installation package via the special questions page of the application. Additionally, we require that you provide a 2D version or other video documentation of the project via Withoutabox’s Secure Online Screener system. While we do prefer that submitted projects maintain world premiere status, Virtual Reality Projects may have been previously made available, either for free or for purchase, via any existing distribution platform or exhibited at other festivals, industry trade shows, and/or conventions and still retain their eligibility for open submission to the Festival.

New Frontier Exhibition and Performances
A wide range of innovative works engaging with cinematic storytelling will be considered for the New Frontier Exhibition. These works can take a wide variety of forms, including cinematic performances, media installations, custom digital platforms, and AR/MR/XR projects. This submission process is by invitation only. If you have a project you would like us to consider, please send a 200-word proposal to newfrontier@sundance.org no later than August 6, 2018. If selected, you will receive a private invitation to formally submit your project. There is no fee required to submit an exhibition proposal.

  • For which platforms do you accept Virtual Reality project submissions?
We currently accept submissions for a variety of platforms, including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, and Google Daydream. If your VR project was created for a platform other than those listed above, please contact us at newfrontier@sundance.org to determine your project’s eligibility.

Which formats/specifications are accepted for Virtual Reality Project submissions?
We accept any PC installation package that is compatible with Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, provided that your package does not exceed 10GB in size. For Samsung Gear VR, Google Daydream, or Cardboard, any application download package (.apk) or 360° video file that will work with any or all of those platforms is accepted. These files must be delivered to us via any standard file sharing service (Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc.) by providing a download link directly on the application on Withoutabox. Additionally, we ask that you also provide a 2D video file (preferably H.264 with AAC audio) via Withoutabox’s Secure Online Screener system. This video may be a 2D version of the project or some other video documentation of the project.

May I submit a Virtual Reality Project as a work in progress?
Yes, but the project needs to be complete enough for us to be able to make a decision. Please provide a thorough description of any missing elements, such as script or visual samples (including partial builds), along with your submission, and keep us updated with any visual aids you may have.

When will I find out whether or not my Virtual Reality Project was selected?
We will email all applicants no later than the first week of December. Please ensure that the email address you provided on your application remains updated until that time. If your email address changes after you’ve filled out the application, you may log into your Withoutabox account and update it. We will not be held responsible for any failed delivery of status notifications. Please ensure that newfrontier@sundance.org is added to your safe senders list.

Do you accept projects from international applicants?
Yes. We encourage projects from all parts of the world to apply!

Can I start an application for a Virtual Reality Project and save it and come back to finish it later?
Yes. You will have a chance to save a work-in-progress version of your application before officially submitting.

Can I deliver my application in person, or via mail or email?
We can only accept Virtual Reality Project applications directly through Withoutabox. All VR applications must be received by our late deadline of September 14. If you wish to submit a proposal for an AR/MR/XR installation, please email a 200-word proposal to newfrontier@sundance.org no later than August 6, 2018.

If I am not accepted into the program, can I still receive feedback on my application?
Unfortunately, due to the volume of submissions we receive, we are unable to offer individual feedback to applicants for Virtual Reality Projects or other exhibition proposals.

    Do you offer fee waivers?
While there is no fee to submit a 200-word proposal via email for New Frontier Performances, AR/MR/XR projects, or other exhibition proposals, we cannot offer fee waivers to applicants submitting a film or Virtual Reality Project through Withoutabox. We strive to keep the selection process as thorough and unbiased as possible, and it is not fair to offer fee waivers to some but not to others. We encourage all applicants to take advantage of our early deadlines to save on submission fees.

What if I have questions or issues with the application?
If you have additional questions about the New Frontier program, please email us at newfrontier@sundance.org. For technical issues related to the Withoutabox application, please contact programming@sundance.org.

  • Don't let a disability keep you from enjoying the Sundance Film Festival and all that goes on around it. Park City is home to one of the world's foremost adaptive recreation centers, the National Ability Center (NAC). The NAC provides recreational opportunities year-round for individuals with physical or cognitive disabilities. During the Festival, you can enjoy great opportunities like adaptive skiing & snowboarding, sled hockey, horseback riding (including Hippotherapy), and indoor rock climbing. The NAC hosts more than 8,000 people annually at its Park City facility, and you can make your Festival experience that much more enjoyable by participating with the NAC while you're in town. The NAC also has limited lodging availability for individuals with disabilities during the Festival and throughout the year. For more information about the recreational programs or lodging availability, call the National Ability Center at (435) 649-3991 or visit DiscoverNac.org.
