"Thoroughbreds"

If Olivia Cooke’s previous turn in a Sundance breakout (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) pulled firmly at the heartstrings, her latest probes the dark recesses of the mind. Playwright-turned-director Cory Finley delivers a satiny thriller with Thoroughbreds, which sees former friends Amanda (Cooke) and Lily (played by a dynamic Anya Taylor-Joy) exhuming their lost relationship amid standardized test tutoring. When Amanda discovers that Lily’s petulant stepdad is hoping to ship her off to boarding school and not her dream college, the former’s macabre tendencies guide Lily down a dangerous path to set things straight.

Finley’s directorial debut taps into an austere kind of opulence where the old “money can’t buy happiness” axiom gets a dark and humorous reboot, but its Throughbreds’ nuanced cast, rounded out by Paul Sparks and the late Anton Yelchin, that drive this genre-bender home.
