The Discovery

Perhaps we've never truly grappled with the implications of a proven afterlife. In The Discovery, filmmaker Charlie McDowell's metaphysical rumination on life after death that comes to Netflix later this month, the imagined comforts of an afterworld provide a way out for humans suffering through their current existence. As suicide rates spike following Dr. Thomas Harber's (Robert Redford) 'discovery,' his son Will (Jason Segel) returns home to face up to the epidemic and find answers to a scientific breakthrough that comes burdened with moral conflicts. After Will crosses path with the mysterious Isla (Rooney Mara) on his journey home, the two fall into a murky relationship that intertwines with the existential questions at hand.
