What to Watch in July

The 2018 Festival’s most batshit crazy film hits theaters this July, and it comes from the unhinged mind of Boots Riley. With Sorry to Bother You, the musician-turned-filmmaker nabs Lakeith Stanfield to play Cassius Green, a 30-something black telemarketer who channels his “white voice” to ascend the ranks of a woefully corrupt corporation in a misguided pursuit of material happiness. But the higher he climbs, and the further he sells out to “the Man,” the weirder it all gets. Riley’s directorial debut slides into a small but poignant new wave of satirical comedy that threads the needle between hysterical and all-too-real.
