After getting off to an impassioned start, the hidden seams in Frank and Lola’s burgeoning relationship are beginning to tear. Frank, played by an achingly sullen Michael Shannon, is approaching the zenith of his culinary career when his life is upended by Lola – a conniving and beguiling Imogen Poots. Frank’s obsession for his enigmatic girlfriend begins to escalate as a mysterious man from Lola’s past reappears, throwing into question the foundation of their own relationship and stripping Frank of his stoic facade. Frank & Lola is svelte in its convolution, repeatedly baiting its characters – and audiences – with the thrill of the chase, but never quite giving in.
