May is brimming with a full crop of films from the 2014 Festival making their theatrical releases. Among them, Jim Mickle’s U.S. Competition film Cold In July paces with the tension of a classic Texas standoff–plastered with sweat and grime and plenty of blood. In this winding thriller, Michael C. Hall plays a principled family man whose world is abruptly altered after killing a home intruder. Also making its way to theaters fresh off its run at the Festival is director Roger Sterling’s–er, John Slattery’s– directorial debut God’s Pocket, and the first downcast reminder of the loss of a prodigious talent in Philip Seymour Hoffman.
