First full day of Sundance...first big panel at New Frontier on Main!
Moderated by the deliciously irreverent Kara Swisher of the Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD, the event featured the only filmmaker ever to win the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance twice (Ondi Timoner), and some of the brightest minds (and biggest personalities) in the Social Media Space (YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, Participant's Take Part platform, and OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network.)
The central question...is Social Media a marketing tool, a distribution platform, a community, or a endless sink hole from which only the luckiest and most popular filmmakers can ever emerge? Is it monetizable or not? Of course, with our Industry in such flux, there are no easy answers to these questions. According to the panelists, there is one word that determines success...and that is "community engagement." Know who your audience is, and give them a reason to care. The tools are there, the audiences are there, but what are you going to do engage them? Remember your film isn't finished when its in the can...nowadays it seems that's when the real work begins.
